WHITESBORO - The New Hartford
Spartans tied a tournament low Saturday
to win the 8th Annual Warrior Classic Golf
Tournament at Hidden Valley Golf Club.

Junior Derek Bard shot 1-under 70 for his
third straight 'Classic' title to pace a
balanced-Spartans attack that posted a
371 total, tying Whitesboro's 2007 record
total.

Tommy Mandel shot 74, Alex Malta
carded a 75, while Alec Bard and Justin
Rockwell posted 76s to round out the
scoring as the Spartans led the 12-team
field.

Mandel, Alec Bard and Rockwell are all
eighth graders, making New Hartford's
unbeaten season (11-0 Tri Valley League
and 13-0 overall) all the more impressive.

"Having Derek and Alec back, who both
have state tournament competition
experience really helps," New Hartford
coach Tom Snizek said.

"Alex and Patrick (Coughlin) are very
experienced players as juniors and
Tommy Mandel and Justin Rockwell are
just playing lights out as eighth graders ...
We are just really solid one through six."

The Spartans also tied Whitesboro with
four team titles at the event. No other
team has won.

The Warriors finished second with a 384
total. Westhill (394), Cazenovia (406) and
Camden (418) rounded out the top five.

Derek Bard's third title - he won with
even-par 71s in 2010 and 2011 - tied the
individual low set by Whitesboro's Doug
DeCarlo in 2008. Bard's round could've
been much lower.

"I hit the ball very well," Bard said. "I
missed a lot of putts, and a few from
inside five feet ... but that's the game."

In the next few weeks, Bard will be going
for his fourth straight Class championship
and third straight Section III title.

For Bard there is always pressure to
perform, and he enjoys the challenge.

"I guess when you keep winning these
things, everyone expects you to win
again, and if you don't, they ask you 'what
happened.' It's pretty important to me,
pride wise, to perform against top
competition, both at Raddison and then
definitely at Sectionals."

Whitesboro's Alex Egresits tied Mandel
for second with a 3-over 74. Kyle Kupiec,
also from Whitesboro, tied Malta and
Camden's Austin Chandler for fourth with
a 4-over round.

Snizek already has his sight set on a
strong finish to what's been a special
season.

"We want to finish undefeated, but we
know it won't be easy," Snizek said. "We
have to play Whitesboro here
Wednesday, and they are always tough
and we know it will be a good match.
Then hopefully we can repeat as
sectional champs."
