Erratic driver
hurts state
champ's chances

FARMINGDALE -- Derek Bard shot
6-over 78 Sunday to finish third at the
New York State Federation High
School Tournament at Bethpage Black
Golf Course in Farmingdale.

Private-schooler Cameron Young shot
72 to win.

Bard, who won the state championship
last weekend and is also a three-time
defending Section III champion, and
four-time defending class champ, also
placed third last year at Federations,
but shot a 3-over 75.

Sunday, Bard struggled on the brutally
difficult layout, that has hosted the
2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens.

Most of the trouble was due to a poor
driving day.

"I struggled the whole day," Bard said.
"I didn't hit the driver well and missed
some fairways into the deep rough that
led to bogeys. ... It's disappointing to
end the season on this not, but my
high school season was very special.
I'm very happy about how I played,
especially come playoff, starting at
Radisson (Class A Tourney). It gives
me some confidence and reassurance
come summer.

Bard will get right back to it with a busy
summer schedule. He is hoping to
qualify to compete in the Western
Junior, the United States
Junior-Amateur and Junior PGA
championships.
