To win.

Sure there is a state tournament
berth also at stake this weekend at
Seven Oaks Golf Course, but, the
New Hartford junior is one good
round away from completing a
three-peat as sectional champion.

Bard fired an impressive 1-under 71
during Thursday's first round to lead
Christian Brothers Academy's Jack
Bellardini by a stroke entering
Saturday's final round.

"I'm just going to go out an try to win
it," said Bard, who made four birdies
and three bogeys Thursday.

"I just have to stay in the present,
especially on a beast of a course
like this. You really have to stick it
out every hole and keep your focus
because it is just so tough."

West Genesee's John Clare shot 75
and is in solo third place, four
strokes off the lead. Aiden Fuller
(CBA) and Ryan Clark (South
Jefferson) shot 77s and are tied for

Notre Dame junior Mike Kalil is in
solo sixth after carding a 6-over 78.

Kalil is in a familiar position and
hopes to take the final step to his
first state tournament. Last season
he missed out on making the state
team by just three strokes.

"It's definitely pushing me," said
Kalil, regarding coming so close in
2011. "I just need to start back up
Saturday the way I finished today,
and I'll be fine."

The field of 100 has been dwindled
to just 20 players entering the final
round. Eight local players enter
Saturday with hopes of attaining a
top-9 finish and a place on the team
that will represent Section III at the
New York State Tournament, June
3-4 at Cornell University's Robert
Trent Jones Golf Course.

Ilion senior Dan North (80) is also
close to accomplishing a long-time
goal in making it to states.

"It would really mean a lot to know
you're one of the best players in
Section III," said North, who missed
making the final round by one stroke
in 2011.

"It would really be awesome to make

Also giving it another run is
Whitesboro junior Joel Jakubowicz,
who carded an 80.

Jakubowicz made the final round at
sectionals in 2010 and 2011 and
hopes the third time will be the
charm in earning a state berth.

Also in position to make his first
state tournament is
Frankfort-Schuyler 9th-grader Dante

Migliore, who won the Class C title in
2011, shot 100 in his sectional
debut last May. After carding a
respectable 81 Thursday, Migliore is
in position to contend for a state
spot, as he currently sits just two
shots out of the top nine.

The final locals to advance are New
Hartford's Patrick Coughlin (79),
Alec Bard (80) and Alex Malta (82).

Coughlin and Malta, both juniors,
are looking for their first state
appearance, while Bard, remarkably,
finished ninth at states as a

Sending four players to the final
round at sectionals is the latest
accomplishment in an incredible
season for New Hartford.

The Spartans finished unbeaten,
and won the Tri Valley League and
Class A championships. Also, the
Bard brothers were co-champions at
the Class A tournament Monday at
Radisson Greens.

"It really speaks volumes to their
commitment from the beginning of
the season," New Hartford head
coach Tom Snizek said.

"I challenged them at the beginning
of the season, because I knew how
good a team we had."

"I don't know if it was confidence or
overconfidence, but I told them on
the way here today that we could get
five into the final round. Getting four
is great and I think Patrick Coughlin,
especially, has really stepped up his
game at the right time."

The final round begins at 12:30 p.m.
Saturday with five foursomes going
off the first tee.
